The Gare Montparnasse train wreck happened in Paris, France, on October 22, 1895. It is still remembered as one of the most famous and dramatic train wrecks ever. The train, which was en route from Granville in Normandy to Montparnasse Station in Paris, derailed after it missed its stop.
The train was approaching the station when a problem with the brakes sent it careening through the buffer stop and through the building’s exterior. The engine finally stopped in a dangerous position, dangling from the side of the building above the street. Amazingly, only five people were hurt in the crash, and no one died.
